Altfinstermünz, located in Nauders, Tyrol, is a historic site featuring a castle ruin set amidst a stunning mountain landscape. The castle, originally built in the 11th century, was later converted into a customs house in the 13th century. After 300 years of decay, it was transformed into an adventure destination offering visitors a chance to explore its various features and learn about its history through a film shown in the cave within the castle complex.
The castle complex is home to several structures of note, such as the 16th-century Klausen Tower, a 17-meter-high gate tower that served as a defensive structure. The Bridge Tower, spanning the Inn River with its two round arches, was built in the 15th century. The oldest part of the defensive complex, the Sigmundseck Fortress, dates back to around 1471/73 and served as a watchtower and quarters for the regional ruler. The complex also includes a spacious natural cave and rock passage, and the Chapel of Maria Himmelfahrt, a small Gothic-style chapel from 1604.
In addition to its historical significance, Altfinstermünz is also known for its beach, located at a historic border crossing point between Switzerland and Austria. The beach is accessible via a 2-mile round trip down a well-maintained trail or by driving down a narrow road. Free parking is available at the top of the trail, conveniently located next to a church. Visitors can enjoy a downhill hike to the beach, set in a gorgeous natural setting, and the uphill hike back to the car is also manageable. Alternatively, the beach can be reached from Pfunds via an easier 1-hour walkway.
After exploring the castle complex and enjoying the beach, visitors can stop at the Klausen Tavern for a meal. The tavern offers a traditional Tyrolean afternoon snack known as "Marend". The trails around the beach are also suitable for mountain biking, offering yet another way to explore the area.
