Playa de Covas is a popular beach located in the Covas neighborhood of Viveiro, Spain, in the province of Lugo, Galicia. Covas is the main beach of Viveiro, known for its natural beauty and historical significance. The beach is characterized by its long shoreline, approximately 1,500 meters in length, and variable width of 30 meters. The sand is fine and white, the waves are calm, and the water is warm, creating an inviting environment for sunbathing and bathing. Particularly, the beach is suitable for families with children due to its tranquility and peaceful atmosphere throughout the year.
One of the unique natural characteristics of Playa de Covas is the transformation it undergoes between high and low tide. At low tide, the beach reveals large rock formations at its end, which are submerged during high tide, offering a different, yet equally beautiful view. At the western end of the beach, a stream reaches the beach, adding to the natural beauty of the area. There are also rock formations, known as "Os Castelos", which house a monument dedicated to the memory of the frigate Santa MarĂa Magdalena and the brigantine Palomo, which sank together in 1810. The remains of the shipwreck can be seen when the sea is rough.
Playa de Covas is not only known for its natural beauty but also for its recreational activities. It is suitable for surfing, with variable peaks and long, fast, and maneuverable waves. The beach also features a rock outcropping that is home to oysters, making it an interesting spot for snorkeling, especially around the small island at the end of the outcropping at low tide.
The beach is equipped with various facilities and services, including accessibility for disabled people. There is a promenade that highlights the beach's shell-like shape and the presence of dunes. Additionally, there is a park called Parque de José Antonio Pernas that is equipped with picnic facilities and a camping area.
Despite its popularity, particularly during the summer season, parking at Playa de Covas is relatively easy, even during the peak season in July. However, visitors should note that there are no lifeguard services at the beach. To reach the beach from the historic center of Viveiro, one must cross the Puente de la Misericordia towards Ferrol and Coruña, and it is about 2 km away on the right-hand side.
Playa de Covas amenities include parking.
Visitor reviews highlight the picturesque nature of the beach, with its rock outcroppings, fine white sand, and the unique experience it offers during both low and high tides. Many visitors appreciate the tranquility of the beach, making it ideal for walks, sunbathing, and family outings. However, some visitors have expressed dissatisfaction with the water visibility for snorkeling and the lack of lifeguards.
