Fliegenberg Strand

Fliegenberg Strand, also known as Fliegenberger Werder, is a serene beach located near Fliegenberg in the vicinity of the Elbe River. The beach's history dates back to the period between 1400 and 1600 when it was formed and separated from the dike by a shallow arm of the river known as Kleine Elbe.

The beach's natural characteristics make it an ideal spot for relaxation and swimming. However, due to the beach's natural flow, visitors with young children are advised to be cautious. Despite this, the beach is a popular spot for picnics and dog walks.

The beach is clean and well-maintained, offering a splendid view of the surrounding area. Even though it lacks food facilities and toilets, its allure remains unaffected, with visitors often bringing their own food and drinks. There are also shaded areas on the beach, providing a respite from the sun during the hot summer days.

In the past, the area surrounding the beach was used for oil exploration. During World War II, efforts were made to find oil in the area, a practice that continued after the war with small explosions. In 1961, a decision was made to establish a drilling site at this location. The oil, which was extracted from a depth of approximately 1900 meters, was transported via a pipeline to a storage area. The oil production, which used pumps known as "Nickesel" due to their steady pumping motion, was discontinued in 1993.

The beach's location near the Elbe River and the Elvs-Damm, a wing dike constructed perpendicular to the main dike, adds to its unique charm. Despite its quiet and secluded nature, Fliegenberg Strand is a top choice among locals, often preferred for its tranquility and natural beauty.
