Kostanj Beach, located in the city of Rijeka, Croatia, is a public space that was established in 1996. Its design was planned with the intent to cater to individuals with physical disabilities, making it a unique and inclusive destination. The beach is situated near a walking trail on the coast between the areas of Bivio and Preluk, providing a blend of man-made and natural beauty.
The beach is small in size and is characterized by its clear water, which offers visibility to the bottom. The water is not too deep at the shore, making it a safe space for visitors of all ages. However, it is worth noting that the beach provides little to no shade as there are no bigger rocks or trees to provide cover from the sun.
Kostanj Beach is designed with de-leveled terraces, ramps, and wide stairs to accommodate individuals with different mobility levels. The surfaces are intentionally rough to prevent sliding. Additional facilities include a descending mechanism, ramp access to the seawater, sanitary facilities, and showers. There is also a protective sea net installed.
The beach incorporates traditional materials such as rough Brač stone, rough grit material from Pannonia Rivers, and teak inlays, combined with white stone panels, natural rocks, stones, and old walls to enhance its aesthetic appeal.
In terms of amenities, besides the aforementioned facilities, there is a free shower for visitors to use. There is also a large parking area nearby, making the beach easily accessible for those traveling by car. On certain days, the beach is not crowded, providing a more private beach experience.
Kostanj Beach is a recipient of the Blue Flag award, a symbol of ecological awareness, making it an environmentally responsible destination. This was the first Blue Flag awarded to a beach in Rijeka, granted in 2010.
