Lac d'Arbey is a picturesque mountain lake situated above the village of Evolène in the Valais region of Switzerland. The lake is nestled within the Val d'Hérens, on the left bank of the Rhône. It stands at an altitude of 1766 meters and is known for its stunning views of the Dent-Blanche mountain, which is beautifully mirrored in the lake's clear water. The lake is surrounded by a scenic mountain landscape that provides a perfect backdrop for photography enthusiasts.
The lake is accessible only by foot. There are several hiking routes to reach Lac d'Arbey, each offering a unique experience. One can start from the village of Evolène and follow the carriageway towards Lanna for about 1 km. After crossing the La Borgne river bridge, yellow signs for pedestrian paths indicate the starting point of the hike. The hike, approximately 6 km long, is classified as T2 in difficulty and is suitable for children. The walk time is between 2 to 3 hours, with an elevation gain of around 500 meters. The recommended period to visit is from May to October.
For those who prefer public transportation, the nearest train station is Sion. From Sion, visitors can take a postal bus towards "Les Haudères" and stop at the Evolène Village. From Evolène, it takes around 75 minutes to hike to the lake. If travelling by car, visitors can take the Montreux highway exit towards Sion Est and follow the signs for Val d'Hérens until reaching Evolène. A small free parking lot is available at the entrance of the village.
Visitors to Lac d'Arbey can enjoy a variety of amenities. The area around the lake is well-equipped with picnic tables, making it an ideal spot for picnics. There is also a refreshment stand called Arbey, where visitors can unwind and enjoy the magnificent panorama of the Dent Blanche mountain and the Val d'HĂ©rens. During the summer season, a restaurant near the lake offers drinks and traditional Valais specialties.
Despite being a popular destination, Lac d'Arbey retains its serene atmosphere. However, it's worth noting that the lake's natural characteristics have been affected by climate change and unusually hot temperatures, leading to an increase in moss in the lake. Nevertheless, Lac d'Arbey remains a beautiful and sought-after destination.
