Misery Beach

Misery Beach is a tranquil and picturesque location situated near Albany, in Western Australia. Contrary to its name, it is a favourite amongst those who have discovered its charm. The beach is recognized for its extraordinary natural beauty, characterized by a unique water color and stunning granite cliffs that descend into the sea, creating a striking contrast with the sandy white shoreline.

This remote beach is approximately 200 meters long and is nestled between an imposing granite headland and a rocky point. These natural features provide shelter from south-east to south-west winds, making it an ideal spot for relaxation. The thickly vegetated hillside at the back further enhances its seclusion and beauty. From this beach, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of King George Sound, the rugged coastline, and islands. On clear days, one can even glimpse the Stirling Range in the distance.

Despite its remote location, Misery Beach is well-maintained, thanks to the dedicated efforts of various funding bodies and maintenance personnel. It is accessible via a gravel road off the bitumen, and the journey, although short, is well worth it. The beach is about 20km from Albany along Frenchman's Bay Rd, with a turnoff before the ex-whaling station leading to the Salmon Holes. From there, visitors can take Murray Rd and then a gravel road towards Isthmus Hill car park, where a short track branches off to Misery Beach.

Despite its undeniable beauty, Misery Beach is not usually crowded. It is often frequented by locals and is a perfect spot for quiet contemplation, reading a book, or spending a day out with the family. However, visitors should be aware that the beach can be windy and choppy at times, and the waves can be quite large. Additionally, the presence of marchflies can occasionally be a nuisance.

The beach's name is believed to have originated from the time when a whaling station operated nearby, and remnants from the whaling operations would wash ashore, creating a rather grim atmosphere. Today, however, Misery Beach stands as a testament to the serene beauty and tranquillity that nature offers.
