Plaja Sfântu Gheorghe

Plaja Sfântu Gheorghe is a serene beach located in the Danube Delta, in the Tulcea county of southeastern Romania. Specifically, it is nestled at the mouth of the Sfântu Gheorghe branch of the Danube as it flows into the Black Sea. Its location approximately 1 km from the town of Sfântu Gheorghe and 3 km from the town center adds to its untouched charm. Despite its relative remoteness, it is hailed as one of the most beautiful wild beaches in Europe and is recognized as an important protected natural area due to its unique biodiversity. The beach is characterized by its expansive size, stretching approximately 14 km, and its exceptionally fine white sand. The sea water is less salty than typical Romanian seaside locations, attributed to its proximity to the Danube. The sea is not deep, allowing bathers to venture quite far into the water without it exceeding 1.5 m. However, swimming near the mouth of the Sfântu Gheorghe arm of the Danube is discouraged due to the presence of strong currents. One of the unique natural phenomena that can be observed at Plaja Sfântu Gheorghe is the presence of "sea fireflies" that emit a phosphorescent glow at night, especially during times of breaking waves. This spectacle can be witnessed only at this beach and at Gura Portiței. The beach is not overly crowded, providing visitors with ample space and the opportunity for a peaceful and solitary experience. However, for those seeking company, there are areas near the main entrance where people tend to gather. Amenities include terraces at the entrance where visitors can purchase drinks and ice cream. Efforts have been made to maintain cleanliness, with garbage bins provided by the local government along the road leading to the beach. Access to Plaja Sfântu Gheorghe can be somewhat challenging. Visitors can reach the beach by walking for about 1 km along the main street from the town or by taking a paid transport service called "trocariciul," a tractor or off-road vehicle with a specially designed trailer for transporting people. Alternatively, visitors can take a boat from Tulcea, Mahmudia, or Murighiol to the town of Sfântu Gheorghe, followed by either a walk or a ride on the "trocariciul" to the beach. In addition to its natural allure, Plaja Sfântu Gheorghe offers opportunities for exploration. Visitors can take a boat ride through the Danube Delta to observe different bird and animal species in their natural habitat or visit nearby traditional villages to experience local customs and traditions. Camping on the beach is also possible, although the distance to water and food supply points in the village may pose a challenge.
