Platja de la Rubina

Platja de la Rubina, commonly referred to as the wild beach, is a tranquil and naturally beautiful beach situated in the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries, in the Alt Empordà region. The beach is known for its expansive sandy landscape, which is characterized by dunes, hollows, and lagoon systems, typical of marshy areas. Unlike other nearby beaches, such as Santa Margarita and Empuriabrava, Platja de la Rubina is devoid of any buildings in its immediate vicinity, which contributes to its serene and natural atmosphere.

The beach is unique in that it is the only beach in the municipality where dogs are allowed, making it a popular destination for dog owners. The beach provides an excellent opportunity for dogs to socialize with others. However, due to the lack of natural shade, dog owners are encouraged to provide shade for their pets.

Platja de la Rubina is also a favored spot for kitesurfing, particularly when wind conditions are favorable. The beach's spaciousness allows for a variety of water sports activities. However, visitors are advised to exercise caution when kitesurfers are present, as they can occasionally come close to swimmers.

Access to the beach is relatively straightforward. Visitors can reach the beach by car via the gyratory system on the Roses road, following the Empuriabrava airfield. There is ample parking available adjacent to the beach. To protect the natural environment, particularly the dune regeneration efforts, visitors are encouraged to use the designated access points.

Despite its popularity among dog owners and kitesurfers, Platja de la Rubina is known to be generally uncrowded, offering a peaceful beach experience. However, during peak times, the beach is patrolled by police to maintain order and safety. It is worth noting that the beach is not considered disabled-friendly due to the presence of large steps at the entrance path. The beach is a part of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, further emphasizing its natural appeal.

The beach's shallow waters extend a considerable distance from the shore, making it suitable for children. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility, especially in the mornings when the beach is often empty. However, it is important to be aware that jellyfish have been spotted in the waters, though they are not considered dangerous.
