Ponte dei Salti, a popular bathing spot, is situated in the scenic Verzasca Valley in Ticino, Switzerland. This location is renowned for its picturesque mountain scenery, crystal-clear emerald-green river water, and natural pools. The beach area is known for its unique rock formations and the presence of a charming twin-arched medieval stone bridge that crosses the Verzasca River, adding to the allure of the place. This bridge, also known as the "ponte romano" or "jump bridge," was initially built in the 17th century on the site of an ancient Roman bridge, partially destroyed in 1868, and reconstructed in 1960.
Ponte dei Salti is not only a place for water activities, but it also serves as a starting point for various hiking routes, including shady ones through the forest along the stream. The marked hiking and mountain trail "Sentierone Valle Verzasca" starts in Tenero and follows either above Lake Vogorno or via Mergoscia along the Verzasca River to Lavertezzo. From Lavertezzo to Sonogno, there is a cultural hiking trail called "Sentiero Verzasca," adorned with sculptures and landscape installations.
The most famous swimming spots are located in Lavertezzo and Brione Verzasca, with the most popular diving spots being the "Pozzo della Misura" and the "Pozzo dei Salti". However, visitors are advised to be cautious as the river can have hidden hazards. The Verzasca River is popular among canoeists and divers, but the water is considered difficult and dangerous. Visitors are advised to pay attention to the warning signs and follow the instructions of the personnel present in the Lavertezzo area during the summer.
There are no facilities such as toilets, changing rooms, or showers directly on the riverbank, and no food or beverage facilities are available at the beach. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own picnic supplies. However, there are grottos and restaurants in the nearby towns along the road.
Visitors can reach Ponte dei Salti by public transportation, taking a train to Tenero then a bus to Lavertezzo or Brione, or a direct bus from Locarno. Those traveling by car can take the Valle Verzasca highway exit, continuing through Tenero-Contra. Parking in the Verzasca Valley is subject to a fee and is regulated by the "Verzasca Parking Card," which can be obtained at information points, tourist offices, restaurants, kiosks, and parking meters. There are over 30 parking lots along the river where visitors can park with a daily or weekly card. However, parking spaces can be limited on beautiful summer days.
Camping options are available at the end of the valley, near Tenero on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore. Overnight parking for motorhomes is possible in certain areas, such as Brione and Sonogno, indicated by signs for the "Verzasca CAMPERCARD."
Ponte dei Salti can get crowded, with lots of people enjoying the cool water and the scenic surroundings. Despite the crowd, the beach offers a tranquil experience, with the sound of water coupled with the vibrant colours making it a piece of heaven on earth, drawing visitors from far and wide.
