Porto Mós Beach

Porto Mós Beach, also known as Praia Porto de Mós, is located in the Faro District of Portugal, specifically in Lagos, Algarve. It is situated to the west of Ponta da Piedade and is known as the surfing beach of Lagos due to its wind, waves, and tides making it an ideal spot for water sports such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing, sailing, and paragliding.

The beach is characterized by its unique natural characteristics such as its white rock cliffs and sea rocks which add to its scenic beauty. It features a long stretch of golden sand, with the water conditions varying between calm waters and waves for surfing depending on the season and tides. A unique phenomenon observed at the beach is that at low tide, the sand remains soaked with water, creating rivulets that connect into larger streams and rivers, providing entertainment for visitors of all ages.

As the second-largest beach in Lagos, Praia Porto de Mós offers ample space even on busy days, with a walk from one end to the other taking approximately 20 minutes. Despite its popularity among locals and tourists, the beach is not typically crowded. It provides limited shade, so visitors are advised to bring a hat or rent a beach umbrella during the bathing season.

For visitors looking to engage in water sports, equipment for activities such as stand-up paddleboarding can be rented. The beach is supervised by lifeguards during the bathing season, making the sea generally clean and safe, although caution is advised due to submerged rocks and potentially strong waves.

Praia Porto de Mós provides amenities such as toilets, and hat rentals. It also houses a couple of beach bars and restaurants that serve Portuguese cuisine, including seafood, throughout the day and evening. These establishments have terraces overlooking the sea, providing a pleasant atmosphere for visitors.

The beach is accessible for people with reduced mobility. In the evening, visitors can enjoy a sunset view towards Sagres, the southwesternmost point of Europe, from Praia Porto de Mós. For panoramic views of the coast, climbing to the top of the cliffs is recommended.

To reach Praia Porto de Mós, it takes less than ten minutes by car from the center of Lagos. Ample parking is available in front of the beach. Public transport options include bus number 2, which passes through the center of Lagos and arrives at Porto de Mós in approximately 20 minutes. Walking from the center of Lagos takes about half an hour, but a more scenic route along the cliffs takes longer. Other transportation options include taxis.
