Rheinquelle

Rheinquelle, also known as Tomasee, is a unique location in Andermatt, Switzerland, serving as the origin of the Rhine River. The river embarks on a 1,230-kilometer journey from this point, making Rheinquelle a site of significant geographical interest. The area was formerly blanketed by the Vorderrheingletscher during the last ice age, but presently, a Firnmulde is all that remains, cradling the Lai da Tuma at the base of Piz Badus. This mountain lake, located at an elevation of 2,345 meters, is revered for its stunning beauty, enchantment, and importance.

A replica of the former Hoek van Holland lighthouse is situated on the Oberalppass, serving as a precursor to Rheinquelle and linking it to the Rhine's other end in Rotterdam. This lighthouse is a favored attraction among hikers and tourists during the summer season.

The Oberalppass, known as Alpsu in the Romansh language, connects Disentis in the canton of Graubünden and Andermatt in the canton of Uri. The pass's highest point is at an altitude of 2,044 meters, and it played a crucial role during medieval times, providing access to the pig and goat markets in the cantons of Uri and Tessin.

Rheinquelle is not just the source of the Rhine but also features a distinctive beach. The beach's unique location often makes it the highest point during the summer months. Its altitude fluctuates depending on the rainfall's intensity. The beach is marked by a large stone from which the 'first' Rhine water gushes through a crack, a sight that never fails to impress.

The beach can be reached via a hiking trail that descends from the Martschallücke down the flat ravine, considered a 'dead end,' adding a sense of adventure to the journey. The hike over the Pazolastock to Lake Toma is particularly scenic, and the Rhine's source is a favorite destination among hikers.

The beach's natural characteristics evolve with the changing seasons. By mid-June, the upper ice bridge usually disappears, making the beach more accessible. The hike from Oberalp Pass to the beach takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes, making it a relatively easy journey for visitors. Despite its remote location, the beach attracts a good number of visitors, particularly during the summer months. It is recommended for those planning to hike to the Tomasee to wait until mid-June when the snow at this altitude has melted, and the lake is no longer frozen.

Visitor Reviews

Visitor reviews highlight the beauty and impressiveness of the beach, with many praising the fantastic views and the distinctive massive stone. The hiking trail leading to the beach is also highly appreciated for its ease and the unique experience it offers. However, some visitors complain about the ice bridge being gone by mid-June.
