Wied Il-Għasri

Wied Il-Għasri, situated in the island of Gozo, Malta, is a picturesque location that offers a unique blend of natural beauty and tranquility. The area, also known as Għasri Valley, is characterized by a deep gorge-like valley surrounded by towering cliffs composed of Lower Coralline Limestone and Globerigerina Limestone. The valley is adorned with prickly pears and capers growing on the dry stone walls and is covered in red poppies during the late spring.

The valley begins at Ta’ Dbieġi Hill and meanders through the village of l-Għasri, between iż-Żebbuġ and Ta’ Ġurdan Hill, before culminating in a secluded pebbly bay, flanked by impressive cliffs, where it meets the sea. Visitors can descend to the beach via steps carved into one side of the cliff, offering a captivating view of the surroundings.

The beach, although narrow and able to accommodate around 20 people, is surrounded by a stunning natural landscape. Composed of smooth round stones and pebbles of varying sizes, it provides a comfortable surface for walking and sitting. The water, which is very clean and deep, is a popular spot for snorkeling and diving. However, visitors should take note that the presence of jellyfish can fluctuate, potentially impacting the ability to swim on certain days.

Wied Il-Għasri is a favorite among divers due to the underwater caves in the vicinity. The secluded bay also serves as a peaceful bathing area for those seeking quietude. The location is particularly awe-inspiring on windy days when the sea crashes against the cliffs. An intriguing cave where the valley meets the sea was once used for filling neighboring saltpans with sea water.

Wied Il-Għasri is always accessible and can be reached via the Ta’ Ġurdan Walk, a 10km trail passing through the valley. This hike is best enjoyed from October to May, as the summer months can get too hot for a daytime walk. Alternatively, visitors can also reach the location by bus with a stop in Zebbug followed by a short walk, or more conveniently by car. A dirt road leads to a parking lot a few hundred meters away from the beach. However, the final stretch to the beach involves navigating a narrow and bumpy road on foot. The descent to the beach involves steep steps, which may not be suitable for those with lower mobility.

Despite the lack of amenities such as toilets, changing rooms, or food facilities on the beach, a smoothie truck can often be found at the parking lot. Visitors are advised to wear water shoes due to the rocky nature of the beach. The tranquility and unique natural characteristics of Wied Il-Għasri make it a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Gozo.
